Điểm khác biệt lớn nhất: Although đi với một Mệnh đề (Clause = S + V), trong khi Despite/In spite of đi với một Cụm từ (Phrase = Noun/V-ing).

Cấu trúc The fact that

Đây là một “mẹo nhỏ” cực kỳ hữu ích để biến Despite/In spite of thành Although (hoặc ngược lại) mà không cần phải đau đầu biến đổi động từ hay tính từ. Khi thêm “the fact that”, bạn có thể giữ nguyên mệnh đề S + V phía sau.

Ví dụ:

• Despite the fact that he is rich, he is not happy. (Mặc dù thực tế là anh ấy giàu, anh ấy không hạnh phúc.)
• In spite of the fact that she studied hard, she failed the exam. (Mặc dù thực tế là cô ấy đã học chăm chỉ, cô ấy vẫn trượt bài thi.)

3 mẹo chuyển đổi câu từ Although sang Despite

Đây là kiến thức cốt lõi giúp bạn xử lý các dạng bài tập viết lại câu (Sentence Transformation) mà không bị sai ngữ pháp.

Trường hợp 1: Hai mệnh đề cùng chủ ngữ → Dùng V-ing

Đây là trường hợp dễ nhận biết và dễ làm nhất. Nếu chủ ngữ của mệnh đề Although và mệnh đề chính là một người/một vật, bạn hoàn toàn có thể lược bỏ chủ ngữ đó.

Cách làm: Bỏ chủ ngữ, động từ chính thêm đuôi -ing. Nếu động từ là “to be” thì đổi thành being.

Ví dụ: Although Tom studied hard, he failed the exam. (Mặc dù Tom học hành chăm chỉ, anh ấy vẫn trượt bài thi.)
→ Despite studying hard, Tom failed the exam. (Mặc dù học hành chăm chỉ, Tom vẫn trượt bài thi.)

Trường hợp 2: Mệnh đề là Noun + be + Adjective → Dùng Cụm danh từ

Nếu mệnh đề sau Although có cấu trúc: Danh từ + to be + tính từ, ta dùng phương pháp đảo ngữ pháp.

Cách làm: Bỏ động từ “to be”, đưa tính từ lên trước danh từ để tạo thành một Cụm danh từ.

Ví dụ: Although the rain was heavy, we went out (Mặc dù cơn mưa nặng hạt, chúng tôi vẫn đi ra ngoài.) → Despite the heavy rain, we went out. (Mặc dù cơn mưa nặng hạt, chúng tôi vẫn đi ra ngoài.)

Trường hợp 3: Mệnh đề là Pronoun + be + Adjective → Dùng Sở hữu cách

Đây là trường hợp khó nhất, đòi hỏi vốn từ vựng tốt. Nếu mệnh đề sau although là: Đại từ (He/She/It…) + to be + tính từ, bạn cần biến đổi cả hai thành phần.

Cách làm:

• Đổi Đại từ nhân xưng → tính từ sở hữu
• Đổi tính từ → danh từ

Ví dụ: Although he was lazy, he passed the test. (Mặc dù anh ta lười biếng, anh ta vẫn đậu bài kiểm tra.)
→ Despite his laziness, he passed the test. (Mặc dù sự lười biếng của mình, anh ta vẫn đậu bài kiểm tra.)
